چکیده

This paper proposes a new method to analyze human walking by using a 3-wheels rollator walker instrumented with encoders and a 3D accelerometer/gyrometer. In order to develop walking quality index and monitor the health state of elderly people at home, the walking of 23 young adults and 25 elderly people (> 69 years) with the help of the walker, are compared. The results show that many general walking indicators such as walking speed, stride length do not present obvious difference between the two groups, but that new indicators obtained by using the walker measurements and not ∗Corresponding author Email addresses: [email protected] (Ting Wang), [email protected] (Jean-Pierre Merlet), [email protected] (Guillaume Sacco), [email protected] (Philippe Robert), [email protected] (Jean-Michel Turpin), [email protected] (Bernard Teboul), [email protected] (Audrey Marteu), [email protected] (Olivier Guerin ) Preprint submitted to Robotics and Autonomous Systems September 2, 2014 available otherwise are very discriminating, e.g., the lateral motion of elderly people is larger, their walking accuracy is lower, but their effort distributed on the handles are more symmetrical. We also show that this walker may have other purposes such as updating collaborative maps with sideway slopes and location of lowered kerbs.

A New Application of Smart Walker for Quantitative Analysis of Human Walking

This paper presents a new nonintrusive device for everyday gait analysis and health monitoring. The system is a standard rollator equipped with encoders and inertial sensors. The assisted walking of 25 healthy elderly and 23 young adults are compared to develop walking quality index. The subjects were asked to walk on a straight trajectory and an L-shaped trajectory respectively. The walking tr...

A Systematic Approach for Design a Low-Cost Mobility Assistive Device for Elderly People

Walking and sit to stand are activities carried out by all the people many times during the day, but physical disabilities due to age and diseases create needs of assistive devices to help elderly people during their daily life. This study aims to study the different types and mechanisms of the assistive devices. We will analyze the limitations and the challenges faced by the researchers in thi...

Evaluation of Walkers for Elderly People

The aim of this study was to evaluate three types of walkers for elderly people. Four elderly patients participated in the study. The experiments were performed using three walkers: a familiar conventional folding walker, a caster walker and a power-assisted walker. We evaluated walking speed, body acceleration and an electromyogram of the gastrocnemius during use of each walker. The results in...

Estimation of the Effect of Cadence on Gait Stability in Young and Elderly People using Approximate Entropy Technique

Walking stability of human beings varies with age and reduces in the elderly people. Lesser walking stability causes many falls in the elderly people. In this paper, we have investigated the walking stability of young and elderly subjects using approximate entropy, a non-linear time series analysis method. Our emphasis in this paper is to investigate the walking stability using a portable instr...
